Pastor Gilbert Pickett, Sr. was born in Flushing, New York and grew up in the Corona-East Elmhurst community of Queens. He was baptized at the age of seven at the Mount Horeb Baptist Church by the late Pastor, Rev. Dr. Edward E. Jarvis.
After graduating from Jamaica High School in June 1980, Pastor Pickett entered into the United States Air Force in September of that same year and served until 1986. In the Air Force he received extensive training in Administration and Procurement.
Pastor Pickett acknowledged his calling into the ministry in 1988, and was licensed in May of that year at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Cocoa, Florida, under the pastorate of Rev. V. Benford Friar II. After being licensed, Pastor Pickett returned home to New York and began working at the Mount Horeb B.C., under the leadership of Pastor Jarvis. He served as an Associate/Youth Minister.
Pastor Pickett entered into the New York Theological Seminary Certificate Program and graduated in May 1990. Pastor Pickett was ordained by Pastor Jarvis in July 1992. In September 1993, Pastor Pickett was called by the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Oyster Bay, Long Island to serve as their seventh Pastor. He served that congregation faithfully for four and a half years, until the Mount Horeb B.C. called him to be their fourth Pastor in March 1998.
Pastor Pickett is presently serving as Chairman for the Home Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. and the Empire Baptist Missionary Convention of NY; Vice-Moderator-at-Large for the Eastern Baptist Association; he is the former President of the Corona-East Elmhurst Clergy Association; an Overseer of the Sword of the Spirit Christian Fellowship, Inc., former President of the Sunday School and B.T.U. Auxiliary of the Eastern Baptist Association of NY, Inc.; member Baptist Minister's Conference of Greater New York and Vicinity; Baptist Pastors and Churches Union of Brooklyn and Long Island. He also serves as a Clergy Liaison for the 115th Precinct.
